Every candle maker meets the same trap in week one: a jar labeled 8 ounces that absolutely does not take 8 ounces of wax. The label is lying by omission — it's selling fluid ounces of volume, and wax is bought, melted, and weighed in ounces of weight. Different units, different numbers, one conversion between them.
The 0.86 rule
Soy wax weighs about 0.86 ounces per fluid ounce of container space; paraffin blends run ~0.90. So the honest question isn't "how much does an 8 oz candle hold?" but "how much volume am I filling, and what does that volume weigh?" An 8 oz jar filled to 90% holds 7.2 fl oz of wax ≈ 6.2 oz of soy wax by weight. Run any jar through the candle wax calculator and it handles volume, fill level, and weight in one pass.
Fragrance: percentage of wax weight
Fragrance load is conventionally a percentage of wax weight: a 6.2 oz candle at 8% takes 0.50 oz of fragrance oil. Two rules protect you here:
- The manufacturer's maximum is a hard ceiling. Soy blends commonly max at 6–10%. Overload doesn't smell stronger — it sweats, pools, and can ignite.
- Load ≠ throw. Scent throw comes from the wax-fragrance pairing, wick size, cure time, and jar diameter. Plenty of 6% candles outperform sloppy 10% ones.
Why fill level matters more than beginners think
Fill to ~80–90% of the jar. Higher pours reach the wick neck's hot zone, overheat glass, and leave no room for the melt pool to breathe; lower pours waste jar height and look homemade in the wrong way. Also: hot wax expands ~10%, so the fill line you set hot will read slightly lower cold — that's normal.
A worked batch
Six 8-oz jars at 90% fill: 6 × 7.2 fl oz = 43.2 fl oz ≈ 37.2 oz soy wax. At 8% load: 3.0 oz fragrance. Total pour weight 40.2 oz — buy 42+ oz of wax and you have margin for the wax that stays in your pouring pitcher. That margin, multiplied across a year of batches, is why the calculator exists: wax stays in candles, not in the bottom of pitchers.
