The simplest math in crafting
Finished size = stitch count ÷ fabric count. A 140×180-stitch chart on 14-count Aida is 10 × 12.86 inches. Evenweave and linen worked "over 2" divide the working count by two first — 28-count linen over 2 threads behaves like 14-count. The calculator applies the over-2 convention automatically for the linen and evenweave options.
Border: the professional habit
Cut fabric with 3+ inches beyond the design on every side. That margin is where framing, lacing, and mounting grip — and where a future "I'll make it bigger" decision lives. Two inches works for cards and small hoops; finishing-heavy pieces (pillows, tray frames) want four. You can always cut margin away; adding it back means starting over.
Choosing a count
- 11-count: big, fast stitches — beginners, kids, chunky décor.
- 14-count: the industry default; nearly every chart assumes it.
- 16–18-count: finer detail, smaller finished sizes, needs better light.
- Linen/evenweave over 2: the heirloom look; count pairs of threads, accept slower progress.
Same chart, different counts: our example 140×180 runs 12.7" tall on 14ct, 10" on 18ct, and 7.2" on 25ct over 2. Pick the count for where the piece will live, not for speed — you'll stare at it for years.
