The quilt top is the fun math. Backing and binding are the finishing math — and they're where otherwise joyful quilters guess, run short, and drive back to the shop mid-finish. Both calculations are simple once you see the geometry.
Backing: a width problem, not an area problem
Quilting cotton comes off the bolt 42–44 inches wide. Your quilt top is wider than that (unless it's a crib), so the backing must be seamed from vertical panels. The recipe the pros use:
- Add 8 inches to each dimension of your finished quilt (longarm clamps need 3–4 inches of clearance per side; home machines and squaring eat the rest).
- Panels needed = ceiling of (backing width ÷ 40 inches of usable fabric width).
- Yardage = panels × (backing length + 1 inch per seam) ÷ 36.
A 60×80 top wants a 68×88 backing: two panels of 88" → ~4.9 → 5 yards of 42-inch fabric. Or the modern shortcut: 108-inch wide backing fabric, one piece, 2.5 yards, zero seams. The backing & binding calculator runs both options.
Seam craft matters as much as the math
Remove selvedges, use a ½-inch seam, press it open, and stagger panels so seams don't stack into a rigid line. A badly seamed backing shows through quilting forever; a good one disappears.
Binding: perimeter plus a margin
Binding length = perimeter + 10% (corners, joins, and the fudge for where your measurement was optimistic). Strip count = that length ÷ 40 inches of usable strip. Yardage = strips × strip width ÷ 36. The same 60×80 quilt: 280-inch perimeter ×1.1 = 308 ÷ 40 ≈ 8 strips × 2.5 inches = 20 inches → 0.6 yards.
Where quilters go wrong
- Measuring the quilt's intended size, not its actual size. Patchwork shrinks and drifts; measure the finished top before buying finishing fabric.
- Bias binding on straight-edge quilts. Bias is for curves; on straight edges it stretches and wears out early.
- Buying exactly the calculation. Fabric shrinks, cuts slip, and shops close. The 10% margin built into these formulas is the difference between finishing and stalling.
